TinkerCAD, created by Autodesk, is a free, browser-based CAD tool that makes 3D design approachable for students of all ages. It requires no downloads, no fancy hardware, and no prior experience.

To launch students into the world of digital design, we created a simple challenge:
🎒 Design something small enough to fit in a backpack that would help solve a daily problem.
Students move through the whole design cycle — from ideation and sketching to CAD modeling and reflection. They gain hands-on experience with:
- Geometry and measurement in context
- Balancing form and function
- Iteration through testing and peer feedback
- Communicating design intent
This open-ended prompt invites creativity while reinforcing design constraints and real-world utility. It meets students where they are — while encouraging critical thinking and real-world relevance. It’s more than a project — it’s the start of a mindset: “If I can imagine it, I can build it.”

Educators can implement this challenge in a single week or stretch it into a complete studio unit. Whether you’re a teacher, homeschool parent, or program leader, you can implement this challenge in just a few steps:
- Introduce the concept of CAD & show a TinkerCAD demo
- Give the Backpack Helper prompt and define the scope (3-inch limit, one tool per student)
- Allow open build time (1–3 sessions depending on depth)
- Have students present their work, including a short reflection. Guide students through self-assessment and peer critique.
- Extend or scaffold into related design projects (e.g., assistive tech, classroom tools, sustainability) or showcase events.
