This post is part of Bug Machines, a hands-on engineering studio where learners design, build, wire, code, and iterate on insect-inspired machines. The experience blends design thinking, systems engineering, creative problem-solving, and maker confidence—all through real tools and real constraints.

(Overview, learning pillars, tools, and progression)
Designing for Use, Not Just Function
With core systems in place, the studio shifted into user testing and iterative refinement.
Teams put their bug-inspired machines into motion using a wide range of electronics and mechanics—observing behavior, identifying breakdowns, and tuning performance. Every learner was actively engaged: designing improvements, rebuilding components, debugging code, or preparing to explain their thinking for Friday’s exhibition.
The video below captures one team’s morphing scorpion, powered by an Arduino and motor shield—an application of the H-bridge motor control systems introduced earlier in the week.

Feedback Changes the Build
Inviting other user groups to interact with the machines introduced fresh perspectives—and surfaced assumptions students didn’t know they were making.
As a result:
- Designs were rethought, not just repaired
- Mechanisms were simplified or reinforced
- Control logic was clarified
- Form and function were evaluated together
Most teams advanced into a fourth iteration, marking a critical transition: these were no longer exploratory models, but functional prototypes designed to demonstrate intent, capability, and coherence.
Converging Toward a True Prototype
By Day 8, learning had shifted from expansion to convergence.
Students were no longer asking “What can we add?”
They were asking “What matters most?”
This stage demanded:
- Prioritization under constraints
- Responsiveness to real users
- Clear communication through behavior and design
The studio had moved fully into engineering mode—preparing machines not just to work, but to be understood.
