From Digital Concepts to Physical Form

We formed teams, interviewed one another to surface key design priorities, and began sketching individual concepts before converging on shared directions.

In their new teams, students developed familiarity with common fasteners and construction strategies by assembling the 3D-printed components of our robotic claw scaffolding project using metric machine screws, washers, and nuts—an early lesson in precision, tolerance, and mechanical alignment.

After focused instruction on ultra-rapid prototyping and thorough safety briefings on shop tools and equipment, students moved decisively off the screen and into physical space.

Cardboard, popsicle sticks, and simple craft materials became the medium for translating ideas into three-dimensional form. Using hand tools and maker supplies, learners:

  • Tested proportions and scale
  • Explored movement and articulation
  • Evaluated spatial relationships in real time

These early builds weren’t about perfection. They were about thinking with materials—and learning what ideas survive contact with reality.


Why Rapid Prototyping Matters

Rapid prototyping is a cornerstone of professional engineering practice, and in the Bug Machines studio, it plays a critical instructional role, allowing students to:

  • Discover structural challenges early
  • Identify design assumptions that don’t hold up physically
  • Iterate quickly without fear of failure
  • Develop intuition for scale, balance, and constraint

In the Bug Machines engineering studio, these low-cost, high-feedback builds are a critical step toward more complex systems integration later in the week.


Laying the Groundwork for Insect-Inspired Machines

By working with simple materials under real constraints, students began to see how their insect-inspired machines would need to balance structure, movement, and function.

This phase bridged the gap between:

  • and functional engineering systems

The studio had officially shifted from planning to building—setting the stage for motion, electronics, and intelligent control.
